"Heavy Weather Avoidance" is a unique marine-weather oriented book, originally targeted for deep ocean experienced professional mariners who routinely transit the shipping lanes where bad weather occurs. However, the first two of three sections are applicable to anyone who has an interest in marine weather forecasting and basic ocean routing with deep ocean vessel capabilities. There is an assumption the reader (experienced sailor) has an understanding of surface weather charts, which this text does not go into detail except to tie them into with upper air weather conditions. The text also describes in detail, principals of upper air charts (particularly 500 Mb), the different flow patterns, and their impact on ocean route design. It has a chapter on predicting motion with Tropical Cyclones (hurricanes and typhoons). The last segment of the book details deep ocean vessel performance (weather loss rate) on both Atlantic and Pacific Ocean crossings. This text promised to revolutionize the way mariners approach marine weather forecasting, heavy weather avoidance, and ocean routing (transoceanic crossings).
